Hamas handed over “the coffins of the two murdered hostages” to Israel late Saturday night. Israel gave this information. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has increased the pressure on Hamas to hand over the remains of the remaining hostages to Israel as soon as possible under the ceasefire.
No information has been given about the identity of the bodies handed over to Israel. The bodies have been taken to Israel’s National Institute of Forensic Medicine. Israel said on Saturday that the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt would remain closed until further orders, while the Palestinian Embassy in Egypt had earlier said it would reopen on Monday for people returning to Gaza.
A statement issued by the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the reopening of Rafah would depend on Hamas meeting a ceasefire condition of returning the remains of all 28 dead hostages. Including these two bodies, Hamas has so far handed over the remains of 12 hostages.
The Rafah border is the only border that remained outside Israeli control before the war and was closed from May 2024 after Israel took control of the Gaza Strip.
The bodies of Palestinians are being returned by Israel with only numbers and no names. Gaza’s health ministry is sharing their photos online. Under the ceasefire agreement, Israel on Saturday returned the bodies of 15 Palestinians to Gaza, taking the number of bodies returned so far to 135.
