The US State Department said on Saturday it had “credible reports” that Hamas may violate the ceasefire by attacking Palestinian civilians in Gaza.
The statement said that if the attack takes place, it would be a “direct and serious violation” of the agreement signed by US President Donald Trump to end the two-year war between Israel and Hamas. No further details about the possible attack were provided.
The US State Department said, “If Hamas carries out this attack, steps will be taken to protect the people of Gaza and maintain the ceasefire.” Trump had earlier warned on social media that “If Hamas continues violence in Gaza, contrary to the agreement, we will have no choice but to go there and kill them.”
The US President later clarified that he would not send US troops to Gaza. “We will not do this,” he told reporters. We won’t need to do this. There are many people near them who will go in and they will do the work easily, but under our protection.
