The wildfire erupted due to hot winds in France reached the country’s second largest city of Marcei on Tuesday, due to which all flights from Maraseyi were stopped.
At least nine people have been injured in fire related incidents and many residents either had to vacate their houses or remain closed inside the houses as the entire area adjacent to the Mediterranean Sea is filled with smoke.
A large hospital in Marsei had to provide electricity from the generator, rail traffic was stopped in most of the surrounding areas and some roads were closed and other roads were jammed.
Province officials said that more than 1,000 firefighters were deployed to extinguish wildfire. The fire first engulfed the city of Pen-Mirabo and then the city of Marseyi came under its JD. About 720 hectares (acres) land came in the grip of fire.
According to local provincial administration, nine firefighters have been injured. However, no one is reported to have been killed. The provincial administration said in a statement on Tuesday evening that the fire has not yet been extinguished but “the situation is under control”.
The administration described the fire as “especially fatal”. The Marsei airport announced that the runway was closed in the afternoon. The provincial administrator said that train traffic was stopped after a fire broke out near the tracks in L’Sastac, a beautiful area in Marasai.
