Afghanistan’s cricket board said on Friday that three Afghan cricketers have been killed in Pakistani air strikes in Paktika province. After this, the board has also withdrawn its name from the tri-series with Pakistan and Sri Lanka next month. The Afghanistan Cricket Board said in a statement that the players had traveled from Urgun to Sharana in eastern Paktika province on the Pakistan border to take part in a friendly match. It is noteworthy that Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan were scheduled to face each other in a triangular series, which was organized by the PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) and was to be played between 17 to 29 November in Rawalpindi and Lahore.

In a major development, the ACB (Afghanistan Cricket Board) recently came forward and announced that they will withdraw from their upcoming tri-series against Pakistan due to the death of three local cricketers in cross-border attacks in the country’s Urgun district.
The tweet further said “Condolence. The Afghanistan Cricket Board expresses its deep sorrow over the tragic martyrdom of the brave cricketers of Urgun District of Paktika Province, who were targeted in a cowardly attack by the Pakistani regime this evening.” The tweet further said, “Out of respect for this tragic incident and respect for the victims, the Afghanistan Cricket Board has decided to withdraw from participation in Pakistan’s upcoming triangular T20 series to be held in late November.”

It is noteworthy that PCB has not yet commented on this development. The tri-series against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka would have been the second tri-series between Pakistan and Afghanistan in 2025; However, this would have been their first series on Pakistani soil.
In the triangular series, Pakistan and Afghanistan would face each other twice. The first meeting was to be held on 17 November and then on 23 November. However, the attack causes the team to withdraw from the series, throwing the tournament into disarray.
Kabul accuses Pakistan of breaking ceasefire
Pakistan launched airstrikes in Afghanistan late Friday, killing at least 10 people and breaking a two-day ceasefire along the border, AFP reported, citing Afghan officials.
The 48-hour ceasefire brought an end to nearly a week of bloody border clashes in which dozens of soldiers and civilians from both sides were killed.
In Pakistan, a senior security official told AFP that security forces had carried out “precision airstrikes” in Afghan border areas targeting the Hafiz Gul Bahadur group, a local faction linked to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), the Pakistani Taliban.

Islamabad said the same group was involved in a suicide bombing and gun attack on an army camp in the North Waziristan district bordering Afghanistan that killed seven Pakistani paramilitary soldiers.
The recent clashes between the two countries were the deadliest since 2021, when the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan following the collapse of the Western-backed government following the withdrawal of US and NATO forces after 20 years of war.
Tension has remained high along the border since last week when Kabul accused Islamabad of attacking the Afghan capital, a claim the Pakistani government and military have not accepted.
