US President Donald Trump hosted Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif and Army Chief (COAS) Asim Munir at the Oval Office in Washington on Thursday (local time). However, this meeting is clouded over the meeting due to no official picture or video of the meeting by the White House. The White House usually releases photos or live videos of the President’s meeting with foreign counterparts, following the protocol.
Earlier, the US President had hosted Turkish President Recep Taip Erdogan and a live joint briefing was followed by that meeting. However, information about the meeting of Sharif, Munir and Trump was posted only on the official social media accounts of Pakistan. According to the Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office, US Vice President JD Vance and Foreign Minister Marco Rubio were also present. He further said that the meeting was held in a pleasant atmosphere.

This meeting is considered to be the latest sign of the warmth in relations between the US and Pakistan. Sharif was one of the eight billion or top leaders of Muslim countries, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly this week. In these meetings, the strategy to end the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza was discussed. Relations between the US and Pakistan have improved at a time when relations between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi are tense.
After Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, India increased the purchase of Russian oil at cheap prices, which has caused its relationship with the US. Trump has imposed heavy duty (tariff) on India for the purchase of oil from Russia to create indirect economic pressure on Moscow. Meanwhile, the US and Pakistan signed a trade agreement in July, hoping that Washington will help in the development of oil reserves of this South Asian country and reduce the fees on Islamabad.

Sharif reached the official residence and office of the US President’s White House at around 5 pm on Thursday. The media was not present in the meeting of the two leaders and the Pakistani delegation left the White House at 6.18 pm. Sharif’s proximity with Trump grew further when he publicly supported the Nobel Peace Prize to the US President to reduce tension between Pakistan-India this year. Unlike Sharif, Prime Minister Modi has said that there was no third party in the ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
