Gaza’s Rafah border will remain closed, which will increase pressure on the remains of hostages: Israel

Israel said on Saturday that the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt would remain closed until further orders, while the Palestinian Embassy in Egypt earlier said it would reopen on Monday for people returning from outside Gaza.

A statement issued by the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the reopening of Rafah would depend on how Hamas fulfills its ceasefire role of returning the remains of all 28 dead hostages.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry had earlier said the border would likely reopen on Sunday. Hamas has handed over the remains of 10 hostages. In a statement here, it claimed that its armed forces would hand over the remains of two more hostages on Saturday night, although their identities were not released.

The Rafah border is the only border outside Israeli control before the war and has been closed since May 2024 after Israel took control of the Gaza Strip. The bodies of Palestinians are being returned by Israel without names and only with numbers. Gaza’s health ministry is posting their photos online.
