The US has long been considered a land of opportunities for Indian youth and professionals. But recent events are bringing out a different truth. This dream country of dreams is now becoming frightening and insecure for Indians. Three different incidents took place in the last few days, which have raised serious questions about the safety and future of overseas Indians.
The first incident is of Dallas (Texas). 50 -year -old Indian -origin hotel manager Chandramouli Nagmallaiya was brutally killed by a local hotel worker in front of his wife and son. The reason for the dispute was the use of a broken washing machine. The accused separated Nagmallaiya from the head and threw it into the dustbin. A suspect with criminal history has been arrested who is a co -worker’s colleague. The incident occurred at Dallas’s ‘Downtown Suites’ hotel.
According to the Dallas Police Department, originally a resident of Karnataka, Chandramouli ‘Bob’ Nagmallaiya, was murdered after a dispute over a bad washing machine with his colleague Yordanis Cobos-Martinase. Cobos-Martinase (37) lost his temper when Nagmallaiya asked another person to translate his instructions instead of talking to him directly. In CCTV footage, Kobos-Martinez is seen taking out a knife and attacking Nagmallaiya. The victim then ran towards the hotel office, where his wife and 18 -year -old son were present, but the suspect followed him and again attacked Nagmallaiya despite his wife and son’s attempts. Cobos-Martin has a criminal history earlier in Houston, including arrests for vehicle theft and attacks. If he is found guilty, he can be sentenced to life imprisonment or death sentence without parole. If seen, it is not just a murder, but is a scary example of violent culture and hidden towards migrants prevailing in American society.
The second incident is from California. The 26 -year -old Kapil of Jind district of Haryana, who was working as a security guard, was shot because he prevented a person from urinating on the road. Kapil had put his family’s deposits, about 45 lakh rupees, about 45 lakh rupees, to reach America with a dangerous “Dunki route” three years ago. But the US which he had considered to be the place of bright future, he lost his life.
The third episode is directly related to politics. American right -wing leader Charlie Kirk, who was murdered a day earlier, recently made a statement against Indians. He had said that America no longer needs a visa from India, as Indians have taken away American jobs. Not only this, he even demanded that pro -India social media accounts be declared a “foreign agent”. If seen, it is not just a rhetoric, but a sign of an emerging anti-migrant tendency in American political discourse.
If seen together these three incidents, the picture is very worrying. On the one hand, overseas Indians are losing their lives on minor reasons, on the other hand Indians are being seen as economic competitive and burden in American politics. Kapil’s death also shows how Indian families send their children to America through dangerous routes under financial compulsion. At the same time, the incident of Dallas makes it clear that US law and order fails to ensure the safety of migrants.
In this situation, both Indian society and the government have serious questions. Will we still consider America as a land of opportunities and send our youth power there? Is it not the time that India create such opportunities and environment here, so that the youth are not compelled to go abroad by risking their lives? At the same time, it is also necessary that the Government of India put pressure on the US and take concrete diplomatic steps to ensure the safety of overseas Indians. There is no doubt that America’s dream is now breaking and for Indians, this dream does not become a nightmare, for this, there is a need to consciousness in time.
