Russia’s President Vladimir Putin announced on Thursday that Russia would introduce the world’s first closed fuel power system by 2023, which would reuse the fuel spent several times and reduce the need for uranium supply significantly.
Putin made this announcement on the World Atomic Week International Forum here, which attended leaders from several countries, including the Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grosi.
Putin said, “In early 2030, we are planning to introduce the world’s first nuclear power system with a closed fuel cycle in Russia’s Tomsk region.” He said that 95 percent of the fuel spent in it, ie almost the entire quantity can be reused several times in the reactor.
